[Campbell River School District] Athletes, You’ll Love This!

The Campbell River School District has offered elite physical education classes to students (both domestic and international) for a number of years, complete with on-site coaches who often have reputable national and international experience in coaching and teaching. Some of the physical education courses that are available include basketball, hockey, volleyball,  soccer and more. A number of new physical education classes are now available, and may better serve those who are wishing to enter a post-secondary program about athletics, or who are athletes themselves.

Strength and Conditioning

Students taking Strength and Conditioning must be in grade 11 or 12 and will earn PE credits through this course. In strength and conditioning, students will create and practice training routines specific to their sport to help them perform better. Additionally, they will learn about Olympic level lifts and increase their cardiovascular endurance.

Sports Science

Sports Science is a course that will allow grade 11 and/or 12 students to earn their PE 11/12 credit and Biology 12 credit if they take it both years. These classes will cover themes including effects of physical activity on health and performance, focus on movement, anatomy and how the various systems contribute to physical performance. The course is more academic, will less hands-on work.

Sports Leadership

Younger students, as well as senior students, have the opportunity to enroll in Sports Leadership. Here, students will learn how to officiate, marshall, coach and/or school intramurals or community events. This course is hands-on but does not demand rigorous physical activity.

IGNITE Athlete Development

The IGNITE program is for serious athletes playing their sport(s) at an elite level. It is sponsored by Canadian-Sport-Institute-Pacific and is held in the Carihi gym and fitness mezzanine. Specifically, the program targets a multi-sport training program of strength, agility, and speed. Additionally, this program occurs outside of standard school hours and is subject to additional fees.

For international students who left a sport back home, these programs are an opportunity to get that back! You can continue to be athletes, and progress in your abilities. The Campbell River School District offers a number of courses focused on athleticism, in addition to sports and intramural teams. So, rediscover your passion for sport here in Canada!
