Jeff Needham, Executive Director of the Duke of Edinburgh Award highlighted the importance of soft skills back in 2018. He noted that young people’s soft skills weren’t fully developed. Furthermore, business leaders and educators are seeing that soft skills can help with the long-term success of an individual. If they can start developing these skills earlier in life, then students will be better equipped for the future. Because it is in skills such as effective communication, working well with others, and setting achievable targets and goals, that makes an individual succeed. Additionally, demonstrating initiative, accountability, and reliability will make anyone an asset to their work.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a wonderful opportunity for young students to see how they can make a difference. Moreover, this longstanding program recognizes the need to develop the soft skills of students. Just because it isn’t in the school curriculum, doesn’t mean it’s not important.
