Yonge Street – One of the Longest Roads Around
It is hard to determine the exact age of Yonge street. Around 1793, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, contracted to survey a route for Yonge Street from the Township of York to Lake Simcoe, and by 1794 the Queen’s Rangers had begun constructing a road following Jones’ survey. Therefore, 1793 is an estimated date on when Yonge Street was actually constructed.
For the next 100 years, the street’s primary purpose was transportation. This changed with population growth, and Yonge Street became the urban life we know it as today!
