Thinking of becoming an Early Childhood Educator in Vernon?




Located minutes from downtown Vernon with stunning lake views, Okanagan College’s Vernon campus offers an abundance of programs, including the new offerings starting this September for Early Childhood Education Diploma and Computer Information System Diploma. The campus is home to nearly 1000 students, of which over 100 are international. Vernon, a city of over 50,000, is a vibrant community with an entrepreneurial attitude, good employment opportunities, offering a small-town community feel with big city conveniences and world-class recreation. Vernon was selected as one of the 11 communities in Canada for the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot Program which gives international students an opportunity to become a permanent resident after graduation. 

The campus offers Diploma programs in Business Administration, Post-Baccalaureate in Accounting, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Environment Studies, Writing and Publishing, Communications, and Culture & Journalism Studies. In Fall 2021, we have special offerings in Early Childhood Education and Computer Information Systems Diploma. 

Early Childhood Education (ECE) Diploma 

The Early Childhood Education Diploma prepares students to work with young children in a variety of inclusive early childhood environments. Successful completion of the program satisfies the requirements of the Early Childhood Registrar, Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), Community Care Facilities Licensing Branch (CCFB) for a Certificate to Practice as an Early Childhood Educator, a Special Needs Educator and an  Infant/Toddler Educator. 

Career Opportunities 

Students will acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to work with children, families and the community in planning enriched programs in daycares, preschools, and other early childhood initiatives that focus upon healthy early development.

  • Preschool Teacher 
  • Home-based Service Provider 
  • Infant-toddler Educator 

ECE Salaries

The per hour is between $13 -$27 per hour according to The Canadian Child Care Federation. 


Is a fast track to immigration for skilled foreigners who work or study in the area. This federal government program may benefit international students who study in Vernon to become a Permanent Resident granted that they meet all the requirements after graduation.
