Douglas College International Student Updates – July 2021

Dear International Students,

It’s finally happening! Douglas College are preparing to welcome 900+ international students back to our campuses this Fall. Their record enrolment numbers this Fall indicate that the international students’ determination to pursue their studies in Canada has been relatively unscathed by COVID-19 and is getting stronger as they are moving out of the pandemic. As always, Douglas College International recruitment team is here to support you and your students, virtually, and soon-to-be in person.

Travelling to Canada updates and resources for your students

Starting July 5, fully vaccinated international students travelling for the purpose of studying may be exempt from the 14-day quarantine or taking the COVID-19 test on day 8. Students must have received the full series of a vaccine — or combination of vaccines — accepted by the Government of Canada at least 14 days prior to entering Canada. For the full details, please see the federal news release and download the infographic.

  • All incoming students need a quarantine plan, whether they’re vaccinated or not, in case their arrival test returns positive and they need to isolate.
  • International students can receive their vaccine in any country, and must provide documentation supporting their vaccination in English, French or with a certified translation.
  • International students are required to provide mandatory travel information via the ArriveCAN app.
  • For students who are not fully vaccinated, there are no changes to Canada’s current border measures.

The Government of Canada is expected to announce further stages of border reopening in the coming weeks. Refer to their website for the most up-to-date information.

If your student plans to travel to Canada soon, be sure to visit IRCC website, Douglas College Travelling to Canada page, College’s COVID-19 FAQs and ask them to download the BC COVID-19 Support App.

Roldán-Flores comes to the College with over 10 years of experience in the post-secondary education sector, notably international student recruitment, student services, and partnership development. We are grateful to Dr. Ouyang for his invaluable contribution and excited for Leonel Roldán-Flores to join the Douglas College International community!

New program: international students prepare to be “global citizens”

Whether your student is preparing to become a cybersecurity analyst, environmental scientist, an educator or a business professional, their career will be intertwined with what governments, scientists or businesses will be doing beyond their home country’s borders. To succeed in their profession, 21st century graduates need to be able to critically examine the world we live in, have an understanding of diverse worldviews, cultures and languages and how global economic, environmental and social systems work.

Douglas College students will soon be able to add a “world citizen” to their resumés with a brand new credential designed to help them succeed in our increasingly interconnected world. The 15-credit Global Competency Certificate (GCC) will help students gain global perspectives on the content and problems of their chosen discipline, while they are working on their primary credential. Students will build their global competencies through an international or local learning experience, such as an exchange, field school or volunteer opportunity.

University Pathways updates

Douglas College offers opportunities for students to meet our English Language Proficiency admission requirement by improving their English skills at one of our internationally-acclaimed ESL partners through articulated pathways. These pathways allow students to seamlessly enter Douglas College, without having to take TOEFL or IELTS.

We are excited to announce a new pathway partnership with Tamwood, an ESL school with campuses in Vancouver, Whistler and Toronto. Successful completion of Tamwood Academic Skills for University Success 4: University Pathway Level 4 (EAP 194) will meet Douglas College English Proficiency requirement to most programs.

Additionally, through our long-standing University Pathways partner, ILSC Language Schools, Douglas College applicants can now obtain missing high school credits approved by Ontario’s Ministry of Education. This unique opportunity will be useful to your students applying to Douglas College programs that have specific prerequisite requirements (Grade 11 or 12 Math, Chemistry, Physics or Biology), for instance, business and University Transfer programs, Engineering or Computing Science Diploma.

For details on these two exciting opportunities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Admissions Officer, TamwoodILSC or Douglas College Pathways directly. For a full list of Pathway partners see here.
