What You Need to Know to become a Graphic Designer in British Columbia

Graphic Design generally refers to art and professionalism, employing “visual” to communicate with people and convey different emotions.

With the popularization of computer technology, people use different forms of graphic design including advertising, newspaper, magazines, film and television production, animation, printing, art, photography, interior design, fashion design, website design, to attract their audiences.

I would introduce five post-secondary institutions for students who are planning to work as a graphic designer in the future.

British Columbia Institute of Technology

Graphic Design(Associate Certificate)

Graphic Communications Technology Management Diploma

  • enrollment date: September

British Columbia Institute of Technology, known as BCIT, is famous in BC for its high employment rate of graduates and high practicality of courses. BCIT offers two design-related majors: Graphic Design Certificate (6-month diploma course) and Graphic Communications Technology Management Diploma (two-year specialist course).

Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Graphic Design for Marketing (four-year degree)

Kwantlen Polytechnic University, KPU for short, provides a wide range of business, art and design course. All their courses are student-oriented, taught in small classes in an interactive vibe.

This major has its design school, KPU’s Wilson School of Design, and is the only Canadian design school that won gold awards in three categories in selecting The Business of Fashion magazine in June 2020. The Picture below shows students’ artwork at KPU.

Vancouver Community College

Graphic Design (two-year Diploma)

Vancouver Community College (VCC) is located in downtown Vancouver, BC, Canada. It is the largest and oldest government-approved public college in the province. As a career-oriented college, it pays great attention to enabling students to master an employment skill in the shortest amount of time.

University of the Fraser Valley

Bachelor of Fine Arts, Graphic and Digital Design Major (four-year degree)

Graphic and Digital Design (two-year diploma)

  • enrollment date: January, September

University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) was founded in 1974. The school has four campuses in BC, Canada, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission City, Hope Town, and an overseas branch school was established in Chandigarh, India.

Vancouver Island University

Bachelor of Design in Graphic Design (four-year degree)

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public university in BC and is located on Vancouver Island. It has a mild climate, warm winters, cool summers, beautiful scenery, and convenient transportation. The Picture below shows students’ artwork at VIU
