Four Popular Programs at Fanshawe College

1. Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance

Motive Power Technician (Automotive) is a two-year Ontario University diploma program. Students will learn about aircraft systems in general aviation, corporate, transport aircraft, and helicopters. Preparing graduates for a career in domestic or international aircraft maintenance and aviation manufacturing organizations.

Professional Overview

This program is a program approved by Transport Canada and includes a cooperative education component. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed to start a career in fixed-wing and helicopter maintenance, which covers all aspects of aircraft maintenance.

Employment Prospects

This program prepares graduates for careers in Canadian and international aircraft maintenance and aircraft manufacturing organizations. Students who successfully meet the requirements of Transport Canada will receive 18 months of basic training credits to obtain the 48 months of experience required for the “M” classification of the Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) license. The graduates will have both the knowledge and experience to obtain a license for a fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft in the M1 and M2 categories.

2. Motive Power Technician (Automotive)

Motive Power Technician is a two-year Ontario University diploma program where students can learn about engines, power transmission systems, and related modern vehicle systems. Students will employ the most advanced tools and diagnostic equipment.

Professional Overview

This major focuses on training talents who adapt to the development of the modern automobile industry, are proficient in automobile structure and principles, automobile inspection equipment use, automobile fault diagnosis, and other aspects of automobile-related knowledge, and have automobile inspection operation skills and technical guidance. Graduates will not only have certain knowledge and skills in auto repair business management, but also have organization and coordination skills, communication skills, and administrative management skills. The major is divided into two directions: a gasoline engine and a diesel engine, students can choose according to their own interests.

Employment Prospects

The employment rate of this profession is as high as 96%. Graduates can be engaged in automobile inspection and maintenance, automobile manufacturing, automobile insurance, after-sales, and automobile industry operation and management.

3. Computer Programming and Analysis

Professional Overview

Computer program analysis is a three-year advanced college course. Students will learn software development, client/server web development (including .NET and J2EE), database development (MSSQL and Oracle), and code-level chart algorithms, and use C++ and 3D Graphics for animation and simulation. This major can prepare students to find a job with good career prospects in the IT field. The course focuses on teaching basic IT skills, and gradually strengthens the knowledge points about computers, so that students can master the relevant skills most needed by employers, such as Professional capabilities such as client/server system development, software development, database development for Windows and Linux, as well as code animation and simulation using C++.

Employment Prospects

The computer program analysis major offers Co-op paid internship students, which aims to help them to gain practical experience and prepare for their careers. In addition, Fanshawe College is one of the three colleges in Canada that own the SharcNet supercomputer. This first-class hardware can help students to master and apply knowledge in real life. Furthermore, the major has signed transfer credit agreements with many universities in Canada. Students can choose to continue their studies to obtain a bachelor’s degree.

4. Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education is a two-year diploma course in early childhood education. The course combines theory with practical experience in the field. Students will understand the importance of playing in children’s learning, family participation, and curriculum design. Graduates will be qualified to work in a variety of jobs, including childcare centers, early education centers, and family centers.

Professional Overview

Fanshawe College’s early childhood education is a two-year college diploma course. The curriculum is flexible and covers early education targeted at children aged from 0 to 12. It is practical and has a 6:4 ratio of theory to practice. Each student will have an internship for early childhood education with children of three different ages: 0-3, 3-6, and 6-12. The locations of the internship will be community centers, kindergarten, school boards, and child care centers.

Employment Prospects

Graduates can enter the Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership major of Fanshawe College to continue their undergraduate studies and complete the undergraduate degree. This undergraduate major has an agreement with the Weston University (formerly the University of Western Ontario) Master of Teaching. Students are eligible to apply for a Master of Education after graduation.
