How to Become an Optician in Canada? -VCC’s Latest Professional Optician Diploma

Vancouver Community College, known as VCC, is located in downtown Vancouver. It is the largest and oldest public community college that is recognized by the government in BC. Their annual enrolment has more than 15,000 students and most are attracted by a wide variety of courses in VCC. Students can choose among certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and post-graduate diplomas. Besides its high graduate employment rate, Its curriculum is renowned for its focus on the needs of society.


The Careers of Opticians

The optician diploma is the newest option offered to students at VCC. It falls under the Health Science Program and has started to accept applications. When people first hear about the occupation of Optician, they might recall their memories of reading out aloud a list of words in a room in their childhood. It implies that an Optician is a practical career because society always needs it. According to Job Bank data, the annual salary of an optician is about 450,000 to 60,000.


Opticians are licensed healthcare professionals specially trained to help patients achieve the optimal vision through eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids, and prosthetic eye devices. In Canada, professional Opticians must first complete relevant accredited courses and obtain a registered optician license before working. Furthermore, Graduates may find employment in optometry clinics, optical shops (independent or chained), ophthalmology offices, optical laboratories, product sales, or other related sectors. VCC’s Optician Diploma is a two-year diploma program that can be applied for a post-graduation work permit after graduation.

  • Graduated from high school
  • Math 11 C-above

English Requirement for VCC’s Optician Diploma

  • IELTS Academic A 6.0 (with no band below 6.0), or
  • TOEFL iBT 80, or
  • Duolingo 115
