What a Legal Clerk Does

Law Clerks play important roles in a legal team. Even if they’re the quiet members, their career is prestigious and contributes to a working society in order for everyone to access their rights and freedoms.

Legal clerks also have different specializations, according to what the firm needs. Some work in immigration offices, in customs and trade, or in businesses. They tend to communicate information between lawyers, judges, and clients. It’s imperative that legal clerks are organised because the information needs to be accurate or there’ll be dangerous consequences.

A Step Further: Paralegal

Being a law clerk already has its benefits, but you can take your education and upgrade it to the next level. If you have completed your diploma as a legal clerk, you can apply for the paralegal course at Fanshawe.

Paralegals work closely with lawyers, whether in law firms or in legal branches in the Supreme Court. Even though you don’t see them on the courts, they are not to be underestimated. They have just as much knowledge and understanding of the law as lawyers do.

The main duties of paralegals include doing research on behalf of lawyers and gathering important documents for the lawyer. As a paralegal, you can be self-employed or employed at a firm.

Program Details

The end goal of the paralegal program is to equip you with the knowledge to obtain your Paralegal Licence. Ultimately, if you want to be a paralegal in Canada, you have to have this licence along with graduation from an accredited institution and good character.

At Fanshawe, you can expect to learn entrepreneurial skills on top of knowledge such as legal research and writing, motor offences, and torts and contracts. The Paralegal program is also a hands-on experience more than it is theoretical information in a classroom. You will spend 140 hours getting real-life experience to prepare you for the licensing exam.

Admission Requirements

A College Diploma in a Law related area (Note: minimum ‘B’ average or cumulative 3.0 GPA)

As one of the requirements is to have a college diploma in a Law related area, this is a good opportunity for students who already have their legal clerk diploma. You can go straight into this program after finishing the legal sleek diploma or you can work and continue later.

A Career in Canada’s Legal Industry

While both legal clerks and paralegals have important roles in the justice system of Canada, their career outlooks are vastly different.

Legal clerks on average make about $48,000 yearly. The position is also a high opportunity occupation. BC forecasts that there’ll be over 1,600 openings available from now until 2029.

Paralegals on the other hand, make closer to $60,000 annually. However, the chance to be a paralegal in British Columbia is a little lower than becoming a legal clerk. From now until 2029, BC expects just about 1,000 openings.

Why Fanshawe College

Not too many schools or post-secondary institutions offer law clerk or paralegal programs, much less to international students. At Fanshawe, where you’re from is not an obstacle to your learning. In fact, Canada shares a justice system with other countries so you can apply what you learned outside of Canada.
