How To Spend Your Labour Day Weekend This Year

Ways to Celebrate in Vancouver

Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)

The PNE has been a weekend and a family favourite for hundreds of thousands of Vancouverites annually. You can catch the Fair this year, which runs between August 20 and September 5. Be prepared to be entertained by show dogs, flying acrobats, duelling pianists, and concerts at the PNE Amphitheater. Admission to the Fair is $20 at the gate for visitors who are ages 19-64. But if you order them online in advance, you can get them for $18! Also, on Fridays (between August 26th and September 2nd), if you show proof that you took public transit (Skytrain and/or bus) to the fair, you can get 2-for-1 admission. But this deal is only available at the gate to the first 5,000 guests who show their Compass card or fare, so make sure you plan and get there early in the morning!

Location: Hastings Park

Price: $18 online or $20 in-person

The Polish Festival

This year, the annual Polish Festival is set to run at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. The event celebrates Polish-Canadian contributions to Canada’s rich multi-cultural background and features local artists, vendors of different nationalities, Polish food, music, and other cultural activities. If all of this sounds interesting to you, be sure to check it out. It takes place on Sunday, September 4th, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is free to the public, so it will be a wonderful way to spend family time for the upcoming weekend!

Nikkei Matsuri

Nikkei Matsuri is one of the largest Japanese festivals in Canada and is a family-oriented event with lots of activities for both children and adults. This year, the event is celebrating its 10th anniversary, so the organizers have planned for an expanded festival site with more food and festival favourites! It will take place on September 3 and 4 at the Nikkei Centre in Burnaby. Admission tickets are $8 for ages 18-64 between August 1 and 28 and $10 at the door. Admission is free for those between the ages of 0-17. Your tickets will be valid for both days, so you could choose to go on either the 3rd or 4th, or just go both days! All proceeds of the festival go towards the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre’s various initiatives, so it’s also a great way to help out your local community!

Although the Canadian Forces Snowbirds are the main attraction, they will also be joined by other demonstration teams this year, including the United States Air Force F-35 team (piloted by Major Kristin Wolfe), the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 team, and the Canadian Forces SkyHawks, which is Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team. As usual, the event will be taking place on September 3, 4, and 5. The Air Shows are set to start at 12:00 pm and end at 3:00 pm, so be sure to catch them during these hours!
