Earn Master’s Degree at Vancouver Island University

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public university in British Columbia located on Vancouver Island. There are currently 14,500 students, of which 19% are international students, 92.8% of VIU students are satisfied with their learning experience, and 92.1% are happy with the overall experience at VIU. All VIU courses are taught in small classes by experienced and qualified teachers. The campus provides a range of facilities to students, such as the library, computers, science laboratories, gymnasium, and a hair salon. There are also supporting services for overseas students, such as counselling, orientation for new students, accommodation, and social activities. VIU is an outstanding post-secondary institution in Canada. The school offers a Master’s program, Bachelor’s program, University Transfer Program, 2-year diploma program, 1-year certificate program, English Language Centre, and a high school diploma program. The Master of Education offered at VIU is designed for those who work in educational roles in various fields, not just for K-12 school education, but to elevate the role of a pure practitioner to a position of academics doing practical work.

The Master of Education program has two main branches, the Master of Education in Educational Leadership and the Master of Education in Special Education. Both are majors for mid-career professionals with an emphasis on inquiry and field research.

Master of Education in Educational Leadership

Overview

  • Bachelor’s degree with a grade of B or above in the last two years or excellent academic performance (Preferably Education majors)
  • IELTS 6.5 overall with no single band less than 6
  • A CV outlining teaching experience (preferably within two years)
  • Two current Confidential Evaluation Reports (recommendation letters will not be accepted instead of)
  • Letter of Intent to Study
  • Admission date: September every year

*The major also has flexible admission for students who cannot meet the degree requirements but have relevant work experience

Master of Education in Special Education

Overall

  • Students will learn to consider the development and learning environment of individuals, including individuals with special needs; issues such as social context, cultural perspectives, poverty, and mental and social health; and the implications of the research.
  • Students will focus on the purpose, process, and impact of evaluating information.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to develop, implement, and evaluate individual education plans (IEPs) and serve students with a variety of special needs in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students, and district and community resource personnel.
  • Students will research current practices to examine critical issues affecting children with special needs and their families in special education to reimagine the field of special education.
