Woodward Library’s Charles Woodward Memorial Room at UBC

If you’re a fan of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, then you’ll want to explore this interesting room before you settle down and start studying. UBC’s Woodward Library first opened in 1950 as a medical reading room, and later became an instructional resources center. Today, it is a library with a vast collection of important books covering agriculture, biology, computer science, forestry, medicine, statistics, and so on. The library itself is known for having the largest biomedical collection in Western Canada!

Inside Woodward library is the Charles Woodward Memorial Room. It was gifted by Mr. P. A. Woodward and made in honour of his father, Charles Woodward, and the pioneer physicians of British Columbia. What makes it like a Hogwarts house lounge? Well, here is a list of decorative items that the room uses:

  • Tapestries which depict the Masters of Spirit and Masters of Science
  • Antique plaques listing the names of the pioneer physicians of British Columbia
  • Display cases with surgical instruments and medical artifacts

Even more, the room is constructed using dark wood with glass windows on the walls, as well as a fancy green carpet! No wonder many people associate it with Harry Potter! Free UBC WiFi is available for guests.

YVR International Airport

Did you know that some students choose to study at the airport? With so many seating areas, free WiFi, and food courts within walking distance, it’s a perfect (and lesser-known) spot for people who wish to study. The airport has designated places called “Quiet Areas”, although this is available for students who’ve already walked through security. Best of all, you have floor-to-ceiling views of the sky, as well as the departing and arriving planes. Last but not least, the airport is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can go there whenever you want without having to worry about when or if it will close!

Here are some areas in the airport where you can set down your laptop and notes for studying:

    • Very quiet at night
    • Close to restaurants and snack shops
    • Lots of tables and chairs to accommodate larger groups
