Guide to Reserving Spots at the YVR Airport’s Security

Introduction

Are you travelling from YVR (Vancouver International Airport) to the states? Good news! Passengers can now reserve a spot in the line at the security screening.

On October 5th, 2022, YVR announced its YVR Expression program, where travellers can reserve a spot in line before their flight for the security checkpoint.

About YVR Express

This new program is free of charge and will aid in reducing wait times at security checkpoints. The flow of passengers will be more balanced, and the travellers will be able to have a better prediction of what to expect, how early they need to arrive before the flight, etc.

Customs

Although YVR Express allows skipping the line at security, travellers must still clear U.S. Customs after security screening.

YVR Express Expansion

This program will eventually be expanded to other checkpoints over the next few months, which will be posted on the YVR Express webpage.

Hours of Operation

This program is available from 5:00 to 19:00 daily at Gate E for flights leaving the U.S. and is available 3 hours to 1.5 hours before the flight departure. Since slots are limited (and can fill up fast), you should book your appointment up to 72 hours in advance.

How to Use the YVR Express Program

The portal, which allows passengers to skip the line at security, works by allowing passengers to pre-book their spot. To begin, there will be four main pieces of information to include:

  1. Flight Information:
  • Date of the trip/flight.
  • Destination.
  • Airline.
  • Flight Number.
  1. Party Size:
  • How many people are travelling to your party (if you are travelling alone, then your party size is 1.)
  • Appointment Time.
  1. Email.
  2. Checking if the provided information is correct.

After selecting your booking time, travellers will receive a QR code will be sent via email, which should be presented to the staff after arrival at the security checkpoint.

Note

Since travellers still must clear customs, ensure you have enough time to do so after clearing security. You do not want to miss your flight! Additionally, YVR will hold your time slot for 15 minutes only so be sure to not be late for your appointment.

When do Travellers Use this Program?

YVR Express is available for travellers going from YVR to the U.S. for flights scheduled between 6:30 and 20:30 (6:30 am to 8:30 pm) at YVR’s E gate. Appointments should be made up to 72 hours before your flight departure or after arriving at the airport. The latest booking can be made 90 minutes before the flight departure. Travellers should ensure that, when using the new program, they check in their bags before heading to the security checkpoint and looking for the YVR Express logo at YVR gate E.

YVR Express Eligibility

Connecting Passengers

Unfortunately, this program is not available to connecting passengers. In other words, this will be offered only to those beginning their journey from YVR.

However, there is still some good news! If you have a long connection with a departure to the U.S. (in other words, if you leave the secured area or the airport and return later in the day), then YVR Express can still be used, as screening will be through Gate E.

Trusted Travellers

This service is mainly available for passengers going through general screening (and are without the trusted traveller program). Those who are part of the expedited programs still may use YVR Express, though they will not receive the same benefits and will still need to follow general screening procedures. If you are a Trusted Traveller, you are encouraged to go to your dedicated lane at each security checkpoint.

Flight Delays

Due to increased travel and staff shortages, YVR had many operational difficulties over the last year. Longer wait times delayed or cancelled flights, and baggage delays have caused a lot of frustration for passengers.

In addition to the YVR Express program, travellers going to the U.S. can use Mobile Passport Control, a new, free app that is available in both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Using this app, traveller information can be submitted electronically before moving through the border.

If you wish to travel in countries other than the U.S., you may use an app from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) to see how long you must wait at the airport before leaving.
