Learn English at the University of Victoria Summer Program

The University of Victoria (also known as UVic) is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Victoria, British Columbia. Established in 1903, UVic is the leading public research university in Canada. Originally belonging to McGill University, a famous Canadian university known as the Harvard of the North, the university boasts about being Canada’s top comprehensive university.

Victoria has been rated as one of the “Top Ten Most Livable Cities in the World” by many famous travel magazines, making it a perfect place for students to travel to this summer. The university offers various English Language learning programs for the student’s development. 

Just like every year, UVic has come up with a Summer Program for students specifically designed to improve their English Language skills from upper beginner to advanced level. 

What kind of programs can international students join?

ELPI (Intensive English) Summer

This nine-week program combines general English classes and academic electives, a perfect option for those looking for a full-summer program. Students already enrolled in the ELPI curriculum between April and September sessions can also get an opportunity to upskill themselves through this Program. Morning and afternoon classes, followed by weekend outdoor activities will help students learn and explore the beauty of Victoria.

Highlights of the Program

  • 22 study hours per week (207 total program hours)
  • Access to the ELC Learning Centre
  • Academic writing classes
  • 5 General English Class levels
  • Optional weekend activities
  • Accommodation and meals
  • International Culture and Conversation Workshop

  • Butchart Gardens
  • Trips to Vancouver 
  • Culture nights
  • Dances
  • Kayaking
  • Hiking

Program Duration: July 4 to Sep 7, 2023

Estimated Fee: $7,118$ (including homestay)

Students must have basic knowledge of English to be eligible for the Program and can take the ELC Basic English Test to check their eligibility for the Program.

Summer Language and Culture

Students can enjoy their summer while learning English through various workshops, games, sports, and culture nights. The Program offers an excellent opportunity to make new friends and understand Canadian culture. Morning English classes will be followed by afternoon activities focusing on the student’s development. Professional workshops will also be conducted on:

  • English for Professional Communication (June) 
  • Foundations in Business English (July & August)

Full-time Program Features:

  • 20 class hours per week (60-120 total program hours)
  • Three to six General English class levels
  • Theme-based curriculum (Canada, Global Issues, Society and Culture)
  • Focus on speaking and listening skills
  • International Culture and Conversation Workshop
  • Materials, UVic Dormitory accommodation and meals included
  • Weekend trips and activities

Estimated Fee: $4,343 CAD (including UVic dormitory)

Program Dates: Students have the flexibility to choose from the following:

  • May 23 – June 23, 2023
  • July 4 – 28, 2023
  • July 10 – Aug. 18, 2023
  • July 31 – Aug. 25, 2023
  • Aug. 8 – 25, 2023

Apart from Summer Programs, there are various other hybrid Programs designed to improve English Language skills and shape a student’s personality. They are:

English for Global Communication (4 weeks)

This program allows the students to improve their English in just four weeks irrespective of level, beginner or advanced. Be it speaking, listening, or writing, the lessons and exercises are designed in such a way, perfect for improving English and boosting confidence. The Program also includes the following:

  • Theme based learning
  • Video Lectures
  • Discussion forums
  • Debates
  • Understanding of Canadian Culture

Length: 4 weeks, 10 hours per week

Fee: $895 CAD

Date: Feb 27 to March 24, 2023

Highlights of the Program:

  • Online Learning Platform
  • Presentations

Intensive English Online (10 weeks)

This program focuses on three levels of academic English, which will be available for students online. Students will have lessons ranging from Reading/Listening/Writing and Speaking lessons to build strong skills in these important areas of the English language. 

Students will participate in learning activities in their own time, such as participating in online forums, listening through record lectures and completing assignments and research. Students will also participate in “Synchronous” (Real Time) and participate in discussion groups and formal presentations. 

The program includes the following:

  • 11-week program
  • 20 study hours/ instructional week
  • Intermediate-Advanced Class levels
  • Focus on Academic English
  • Access to Uvic Library digital resources
  • Seamless Transactions to face to face ELIP
  • Social Connect activities offered
  • Certificate of Completion (For students who receive at least 80% participation grade)

Application Fee: $150.00

Program Deposit: $350.00

Balance of Tuition: $2,945.00

Total: $3,445.00

University Admission Preparation Online (6 weeks)

Students will develop the skills to succeed in a North American university. Students are asked to take two courses during 6 weeks: Academic English (AE) and Canadian Studies (CS) 

In English (AE) students will improve in the following areas:

  • Oral Presentations
  • Academic Listening and note taking
  • Reading academic texts
  • Essay Writing
  • Evaluating using outside sources

In Canadian Studies (CS) students will improve in the following areas:

  • Enhance English comprehension skills
  • Enhance skills in essays, report writing, and presentation in academic courses
  • Guide students with Canadian Academic standards, conventions and expectations
  • Enrich cultural understanding of life in Canada
  • Offer academic tutorial guidance 

The program includes the following:

  • 6-week program (100 total study hours)
  • 20 study hours per week
  • One Academic class level Advanced: CEFR B2+ entry; CEFR C1 exit
  • Two courses: “Academic English” (AE) and “Introduction to Canadian Studies” (CS 101).
  • Tutorial Support by teaching assistance is available
  • Access to Uvic Library digital resources
  • Certificate of Completion (For students who receive at least 80% participation grade)

Application Fee: $150.00

Program Deposit: $350.00

Balance of Tuition: $2,850.00

Total: $3,350.00

Students can have a fulfilling summer by enrolling themself in UVic’s Summer Program, where they can have fun, make new friends, and improve their English Language skills while exploring the beautiful landscape of Victoria.
