Temporary Residence Applicants in Canada Will Again Have Their Biometrics Collected

As of February 23, 2023, the Government of Canada has resumed the collection of biometric data to process applications for temporary resident applications.

Applicants who are seeking a temporary residence for the categories listed below will be required to provide their biometric information:

  • to extend their stay as a student, worker or visitor
  • to restore their status as a student, worker or visitor
  • for a work or study permit
  • for a visitor visa
  • for a temporary resident permit

Biometrics collection is still subject to some exemptions and temporary measures for special circumstances. To learn more about exemptions and temporary measures, please visit the Government’s official website.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, also known as IRCC,  introduced a policy on July 15th, 2020, to exempt individuals from applying for temporary residence by providing biometrics. The reason for implementing this policy was due to the COVID-19 pandemic closures and service disruption at biometric locations in Canada.

What are the steps to giving your biometrics?

Applicants for temporary residence can provide their biometrics at one of over 70 Service Canada Centres across the country. Before visiting a biometric collection site, applicants must book an appointment.

Book your appointment on eServiceCanada Appointment Booking Tool and follow the steps on How to book an appointment to give your biometrics.

If you miss your appointment

Using the eService Canada Appointment Booking Tool, you can schedule a new appointment if you miss your original appointment for any reason, including COVID-19.

If you need the guide to submit your biometrics

When you submit your application for temporary residence, you must pay the biometric fee if you are required to provide your biometrics. A biometric instruction letter will then be emailed to you. Learn more at below’s Government official page.
