Pearson Test of English has been approved by IRCC for Canadian immigration applications. To demonstrate their English language proficiency to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) candidates of the economic class will be able to take the Pearson Test of English (PTE) along with CELPIP and IELTS General Training starting in late 2023.
IRCC’s language proficiency requirements for Canadian immigration applicants have been met by Pearson’s PTE Essential English language test. According to the IRCC, international students applying for a study permit must take the “Academic” language proficiency test.
With the approval of PTE Essential, economic-class immigration candidates now have the choice of five language tests.
Accepting English language tests for Canadian immigration applications
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
Attention: The CELPIP has 2 tests: CELPIP-General (CELPIP-G) and CELPIP-General – Listening and Speaking (CELPIP-G LS). The CELPIP-G test is accepted by IRCC for immigration and citizenship purposes. The CELPIP-G LS test is accepted by IRCC for citizenship purposes only.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- (New) The Pearson’s Test of English (PTE) Essential
IRCC has also approved two French language tests: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. For economic class candidates to prove that they are capable of establishing themselves in Canada economically, IRCC requires them to take language proficiency tests.
According to IRCC’s website, it anticipates that applicants will be able to submit PTE Essential in support of their Canadian immigration applications towards the end of 2023.

What is the Pearson’s Test of English (PTE) Essential?
A new general fully digital English test PTE Essential will launch in 2023 and has recently been approved for Canadian migration. As with other English proficiency tests such as IELTS General and CELPIP, PTE Essential assesses four skills which include speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
There are many similarities between PTE Essential and PTE Academic. The main difference is that it focuses more on vocational training, real-life experience and non-academic topics.
Three governments accept PTE Academic for all visa applications: The UK, Australia, and New Zealand. PTE Academic is also accepted by 100 percent of Universities in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, 99 percent of British universities, and more than 90 percent of universities in Canada.
As well as being able to book online up to 24 hours in advance, test takers have access to worldwide test center slots year-round, and their results are provided on average within 1.3 days. Throughout Pearson’s existing network of 118 countries and more than 400 PTE centers, PTE Essential will be rolled out.
Booking for PTE Essential will begin in late 2023! Let’s prepare for PTE Essential from today!
