About The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program at Sprott Shaw is a comprehensive program that provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to work with children from birth to age 5. Based upon the Ministry of Education And Childcare-approved curriculum, the program covers various aspects of child development, including literacy, physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. It also includes child health, nutrition, and safety. Students also learn about the stages of child development and the various methods and strategies used to support children’s growth and development.

The full-time program currently runs for 45 weeks (or 1260 hours) and includes both classroom-based learning and practical training. Students will attend lectures, seminars, and workshops where they learn about child development, behaviour management, communication skills, and curriculum planning. They will also participate in hands-on activities, such as observing and interacting with children, planning and implementing learning activities, and assessing children’s progress. Students are also required to complete a practicum placement, where they gain valuable experience working in a real-world ECE setting, such as a daycare center, preschool, or kindergarten.

ECE courses include:

  • EC100 – Child Growth and Development
  • EC110 – Guiding and Caring
  • EC160 – Language and Literature
  • EC145 – Nature and Outdoor Play
  • EC175 – Self-Care, Values and Advocacy
  • And more

Admission Requirements

  • Grade 12 / GED or mature student status
  • Applicants must complete the admissions interview and may be required to do an entrance assessment
  • Applicants must provide evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination or have a completed SSC Health Declaration form on file

Diploma Requirements

  • Necessary Ministry licensing requirements will be included in the curriculum and scheduled throughout the program
  • Preference will be given to those who can provide letters of reference detailing volunteer or professional experience working with children indicating their suitability for working in the field of Early Childhood Education
  • You will also need to have an interview with an instructor/director. Excellent communication skills (composition), signing a medical/criminal waiver, completing an SSC Health Declaration form, submitting a criminal record check (must be Public Safety & Solicitor General: Schedule B), and clear testing for TB. (All must be done no more than three months before the start date of the program).

*Please note: English-level assessments will be required for international students for both the Admission and Diploma requirements.

University Transfer Program for ECE Students

As a part of the University Transfer program, students who complete the ECE program at Sprott Shaw College can transfer their credits to a university to continue their education and obtain a degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field. This pathway allows students to gain practical and hands-on experience in the field of ECE while also earning university-level credits that can be applied toward their degree.

ECE students currently qualify for the University Transfer program with the following institutions:

  • City University – Bachelor of Arts in Management
  1. Students will obtain their 1 Year ECE Certificate at Sprott Shaw College
  2. They will then directly transfer to City University to do 1.5 years of their Bachelor of Arts in Management degree
  • BCIT – Bachelor of Business Administration
  1. Students will spend 1-2 years full-time at Sprott Shaw College
  2. They will then transfer to BCIT for their 1-year (full-time) Advanced Diploma in Business Management program
  3. Finally, they will transfer to BCIT’s 1-year (full-time) Bachelor of Business Administration degree

Graduates of the Early Childhood Education program at Sprott Shaw College will be well-prepared to enter the workforce and pursue a career in early childhood education. Graduates may find employment in various ECE settings, including daycares, preschools, kindergartens, and community centers.

The Early Childhood Education program at Sprott Shaw is recognized by the British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development, which means that graduates are eligible to apply for a license to practice as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) in British Columbia. This license is required to work in licensed childcare settings in the province.
