The New Westminster School District is a dynamic educational institution that offers a wide range of academic programs and extracurricular activities to students. Located in the Metro Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada, the district is committed to providing high-quality education to students of all ages and abilities. With its size being 22,000 sqm and having 2,259 students as of January 2023, it’s a comfortable school where students feel at home. The New Westminster School District is committed to providing innovative educational programs, designed to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. The district offers a range of academic programs, including Long Term programs, French Immersion, and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. The district offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports teams, music and drama programs, and clubs. 3: Technology in Education

The New Westminster School District is committed to using innovative technology in education. New Westminster’s only high school, New Westminster Secondary School, was rebuilt and opened in January 2021. This is the largest capital project for the BC Ministry of Education. 

The school was built with cutting-edge technology in each classroom. It boasts multiple computer labs used for drafting, media, graphic design, and information technology. The large gymnasium is equipped with a modern strength and conditioning fitness centre. 

The school boasts a large professional theatre where students can partake in the performing arts as well as the theatre and stage design and support programs. Some other Technology Education programs consist of the following:

4: A Strong Homestay Program

International students who are a part of New Westminster School District’s homestay program are provided with the necessary items to ensure that their needs are met and are safe and comfortable with their living situations. Homestay Managers will determine the needs of each student and match them with a local homestay family. For example, if a student is allergic to a cat or has dietary restrictions, the Homestay Manager will arrange for that student to stay with a homestay family who can accommodate them accordingly. 

Services provided by the homestay family will typically include:

  • A private bedroom furnished with a bed, dresser, desk, chair, desk lamp, and closet
  • Three meals a day with nutritious snacks and beverages
  • In-house laundry facility
  • Invitations to join in family activities
  • An English-speaking environment
  • Airport pick-up when you arrive in Canada

5: Strong Community Partnerships

With just under 80,000 citizens in the area, the district has strong partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. These partnerships provide students with opportunities to engage in real-world learning experiences and develop their career skills. The district also works closely with parents and families to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed.

6: Supportive Learning Environment

The New Westminster School District is committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. The district has implemented a range of measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students, including security cameras, visitor sign-in procedures, and emergency response plans. The district also has a team of counsellors and support staff who work to ensure students have the support they need to succeed.
