Important Update: Biometrics Requirement for Canadian Permanent Residence Applications

Recently, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented a significant change regarding the submission of biometrics for permanent residence (PR) applicants. This update affects both prospective and current international students who plan to pursue permanent residency in Canada. Read on to understand the latest requirements and how they may impact your immigration journey.

Biometrics requirement for permanent residence applicants

Effective on June 14, all individuals applying for permanent residence in Canada must submit biometrics, irrespective of whether they have previously submitted them for a temporary residence permit. This policy update by IRCC marks a return to pre-pandemic procedures for PR applications. During the COVID-19 pandemic, IRCC introduced a temporary exemption in the Global Case Management System (GCMS), allowing PR applicants to avoid resubmitting biometrics if they had already provided them within the last 10 years alongside a temporary resident application.

Understanding biometrics

Biometrics refers to unique physical characteristics, such as fingerprints and facial features, that are used for identification purposes. These details are captured through a quick and non-invasive process that involves digital fingerprinting and a facial photograph. The biometrics collection allows the Canadian government to verify the identity of individuals applying for permanent residence, enhancing the integrity and security of the immigration system.

Implications for international students

This updated policy affects international students in Canada who are considering applying for permanent residency. Even if you have previously submitted biometrics for a temporary residence permit, you are now required to provide them again when applying for permanent residence. It’s essential to be aware of this change and plan accordingly to ensure compliance with the updated regulations.

Essential Considerations for international students in Canada

As an international student in Canada, obtaining permanent residency may be an important goal for your future. With the recent update mandating biometrics for PR applicants, being well-informed and prepared is crucial. By staying abreast of the latest immigration policies, understanding the biometrics process, and seeking guidance when needed, you can navigate this new requirement successfully and increase your chances of achieving your immigration goals in Canada.
