Come Study with Surrey Schools and Get Your Ticket to Space Exploration

B.C. high school students heading to Huntsville, Ala. to participate in NASA challenge

A group of students from Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey, BC, Canada, are gearing up for an extraordinary opportunity. Among the 72 teams selected worldwide, they will be the sole Canadian representatives for the upcoming NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) in Huntsville, Alabama.

Now in its 30th year, the international space challenge sees teams of students design, develop, build and test human-powered rovers that can roam and navigate the terrains of outer space. The challenge simulates conditions that explorers might encounter in reality; for example, on extraterrestrial landscapes like Mars.

The team from Surrey, led by Grade 11 student Jeevan Sandhu, hastily assembled and submitted their entry, naming their rover “LEOcraft” after the school’s lion mascot. The students will spend the coming months refining their design before headings to Huntsville, Ala. for the international competition in April of next year.

This challenge, requiring students to power their rovers, involves a range of skills, including engineering, technology, technical report writing, and even business and social media. The team has emphasized the excitement of representing Canada on the global stage and contributing to advancements in space exploration.

District-wide orientation days are held one week before the semester starts to help international students familiarize themselves with their new school and prepare them for academic and social success.

Parents of international students can attend a free, twice-a-week English language program to develop their own English language abilities, learn about life and education in Canada, and better understand how to support their child’s learning.
