Notable Statement by Immigration Minister – Proposed Cap on the Number of International Students

Minister Marc Miller has mentioned his intention to carefully examine the number of international students and other temporary residents coming to Canada. This comes amid growing political tension surrounding how immigration impacts the cost of housing.

In an interview airing this Sunday on Rosemary Barton Live, Miller highlighted the complexity of understanding the connection between housing and immigration. These considerations were discussed at the cabinet table when setting targets for the number of people coming to Canada.

Quotes:

“Housing continues to be a concern, especially in the post-COVID scenario, with rising interest rates and supply challenges, as well as affordability issues.”

“While immigrants didn’t cause the increase in interest rates, the sheer volume is a factor that needs our attention.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed his perspective during an event in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Friday: “My common-sense plan is to cut waste and cap spending to balance the budget, ensuring more affordable interest rates. Secondly, to link the dollars cities receive for infrastructure to the number of homes they permit to be built.”
