About VCC’s Heavy Mechanical Technology program

The Heavy Mechanical Technology program at Vancouver Community College (VCC) offers plenty of learning opportunities for students across classroom, workshop and real-world settings. Students will build and refine their skills through practical experiences, most of which will take place in VCC’s very own heavy mechanical and commercial transport facility. In addition, students will participate in lectures, demonstrations, group work, peer assessment(s) and project-based learning strategies to hone their leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

What you’ll learn

Throughout the four terms, students will get hands-on with large-scale machinery and equipment to ready themselves for a career in heavy-duty industries. They will learn about the diagnostics and repairs of these equipment and apply industry-standard techniques and methodologies to ensure proficiency in meeting provincial standards across all roles. 

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be ready to:

  • Assess finalized repairs to ensure conformity, precision and quality in alignment with industry specifications and standards
  • Adhere strictly to industry health and safety regulations during the repair and refurbishment of heavy-duty and commercial transport equipment
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical conduct that is consistent with industry standards
  • Collaborate efficiently as a team member
  • Communicate effectively, operate, and maintain a friendly, culturally diverse work environment


Each course is worth 3 credits. Each term, students will take 15 credits, for a total of 60 credits by the end of the 2-year program. Examples of courses in the program include:

Term 1

  • HMTD 1120 – Shop Tooling and Equipment
  • HMTD 1135 – Truck Structure

Term 2

  • HMTD 1200 – Mobile Hydraulic Systems
  • HMTD 1240 – Heavy Mechanical Steering Systems

Term 3

  • HMTD 2130 – Heating and Air Conditioning
  • HMTD 2140 – Trailers and Engine Support

Term 4

  • HMTD 2200 – Powertrain Diagnostics, Service & Repair
  • HMTD 2225 – Electronics and Electronic Components

Admission requirements


To be considered, applicants must have the following program-specific requirements completed:

  • Knowledge of English demonstrated by one of the following:
  • Workplace Math 10 or equivalent


Note that admission to the program is based on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible applicants who fulfill all admission criteria. 

International applicants must be a minimum of 17 years of age, or a graduate of a secondary school. 

Official transcripts and educational documents must be submitted by the applicant based on their specific course or program requirements. 

English requirements

Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for all VCC applicants. For this program, applicants must demonstrate one of the following: 

  • TOEFL iBT/Home Edition – Overall 60
  • IELTS Academic/Academic Online – Overall 5.0 (no band less than 4.5)
  • Duolingo English Test – 95
  • High School English (English-speaking countries): English 10
  • University English (English-speaking countries): 3 credits of Undergraduate English (Passing Grade)

    • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment used in construction, forestry, mining, and other industries

    • Specialize in the maintenance and repair of trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles, ensuring their safe and efficient operation
  • Construction Equipment Operator
    • Operate and maintain heavy machinery used in construction projects, such as bulldozers, excavators, and loaders
  • Fleet Maintenance Supervisor
    • Oversee the maintenance and repair operations for a fleet of heavy vehicles, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with safety standards
  • Equipment Rental Manager:
    • Manage the operations of a heavy equipment rental service, overseeing equipment maintenance, customer service, and logistics
  • Technical Trainer or Instructor
    • Share expertise by training and educating future professionals in heavy mechanical technology programs
  • Sales Representative for Heavy Equipment

Depending on the role and amount of experience, salaries within the heavy mechanical technology industry can range anywhere from $21.00/hour to $50.00/hour, with the median hourly wage being $35.00 in Canada.
