It’s official, as of today February 29th, 2024 11:30 pm EST the simple application that was the eTA is now cancelled. Mexican citizens will require a visa to enter Canada unless they meet the required conditions for an eTA.
All eTA’s have been cancelled unless an individual currently holds a valid study or work permit.
If you currently have an eTA in progress or have applied for an eTA before 11:30 pm EST on February 29th, 2024 you will no longer be able to use it for travel and will need to re-apply for a new eTA (if eligible) or a visitor visa.
Exemptions for requiring a visa to enter Canada:
- Mexican citizens who currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air using a Mexican passport can still apply for an eTA.
Current Mexican visitors inside Canada can remain in Canada for as long as their authorized stay permits. Should they wish to return to Canada they will need to apply for a new eTA (if eligible) or visitor visa.
The government of Canada suggests that you wait until February 29th, 2024 to apply for an eTA (if applicable) or a visitor visa.
- Visitor visas will not be available before that time
- If you re-applied for an eTA before that time, your eTA will be cancelled and not valid for travel.
- If you do not have immediate travel plans the government of Canada encourages people to wait to avoid system delays for people who need it.
