Why is the French language important in Canada?

Canada prides itself on being rich with a vast range of languages spoken and cultures practiced within it.  However, Canada only has 2 official languages and those are English and French.

There are many reasons to learn French as a Canadian and as a foreigner looking to make Canada their home.

Learning French is learning Canadian history. It not only allows you to connect with French-speaking Canadians but you also have the chance to gain a unique perspective of Canada through the eyes of the French community.

Being able to speak French opens so many doors for you in Canada and around the world.

Here are a few areas in which knowing French will help you flourish in Canada:

  • Working for the provincial and federal governments of Canada usually requires one to have basic to advanced French Skills. This can determine whether you as a French speaker, or someone else without the skill get the job; not to mention the potential of a higher salary for just knowing French!
  • Speaking and understanding the French language helps the tourism industry as it allows French-speaking travellers from around the world to experience and visit Canada in their native French.
  • Getting along with all of your fellow Canadians and not just the Anglophones.
  • Building relationships with our fellow Francophones will help close the division in our present-day society.
  • Having the ability to speak more than one language helps prepare one to understand different perspectives and points of view from around the world.
  • Lastly, knowing French can help you boost your points for permanent residency in Canada!

Here are the tips you should know if you are interested in obtaining permanent residency in Canada in the future.

The government of Canada recognizes how important French is for our country. They also declared that the number of French speakers in Canada has fallen drastically. The government of Canada aims to increase the Francophone and Acadian communities across Canada over the coming years. With the recent introduction of category-based draws under the Express Entry program individuals who hold a higher proficiency in French have received invitations to apply (ITA) under one of the Express Entry streams or category-specific streams. Don’t wait this can be you!
