About the Master of Energy Management program

Program description

The Master of Energy Management (MEM) program at New York Tech Vancouver is a graduate-level degree program, in which students learn and explore pressing global challenges, such as energy policy and regulation, renewable technologies, conservation and sustainability. Uniquely tailored to align with British Columbia’s energy policies, the MEM program offers students a  local perspective and a broader national and international outlook on energy-related issues.

Note that application dates are subject to change and programs will close as soon as they are filled. 

Courses and credits

The MEM program consists of 30 credits in total, which is organized into two groups: (1) seven required fundamental courses, and (2) three elective courses focused on practical applications. Each course is worth three credit hours. International students are also required to complete a 0-credit Graduate Communications course, bringing the total credits to 30.

Note that students have the flexibility to customize their studies by selecting elective courses from both the MEM and MBA offerings.

  • Students can transfer between New York Tech’s Vancouver and New York campuses if they wish!
  • International students can work off-campus during their studies and can qualify for Canada’s post-graduation work permit (PGWP) after graduation  

Career opportunities

The energy sector is flush with new opportunities because Canada’s landscape is rich with diverse and abundant energy sources. According to the Government of Canada’s Energy Fact Book, 2023-2024:

  • Our rivers discharge close to 7% of the world’s renewable water and provides a tremendous source of hydroelectric power
  • Canada has the fourth-largest global supply of proven oil reserves and third-largest reserves of uranium
  • We are at “the forefront of  innovative technologies for how we produce and use energy”

Admission requirements

To be considered for the program, applicants must have completed and/or demonstrate the following: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited 4-year college or 4-year university
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
  • A minimum GRE score of 295, if required

Discretionary admission

Applicants with an overall GPA between 2.85 and 2.99 may be admitted into the program at the discretion of the dean. Qualities or circumstances that warrant such consideration will be decided on a case-by-case basis, but reasons include: 

  • Submission of official GRE test score, with a minimum score of 295 and a minimum percentile rank of 75% in quantitative reasoning
  • Successful completion of a relevant Master’s degree, with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • A minimum of three years of prior work experience in a related field
  • An applicant’s potential to contribute to the diversity of the student body at New York Tech Vancouver

English language requirements

Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for all New York Tech applicants. Students will need to provide proof of English Language Proficiency through one of the following:

Applications for all New York Tech Vancouver programs are completed online. 

To submit your application: 

  • Pay a one-time non-refundable application fee of $50 USD
  • Complete the online application form here

You will also need to provide: 

  • Your Bachelor’s degree completion certificate/diploma
  • A copy of semester-by-semester transcripts for all four years of your Bachelor’s degree study
  • Transcripts or certificates received after receiving your Bachelor’s degree
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (see accepted exams/scores above)
  • A 1-2 page long resume/curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A copy of your passport
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors who are familiar with your work (recommended)
  • A Statement of Purpose (recommended)
  • A copy of your GRE score (if required)
