What is Victoria Day?
Victoria Day is a Canadian holiday celebrated on the last Monday before May 25th. This year it falls on May 20th, and is a holiday to honor Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria was the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom and Ireland when Canada was formed as a country in 1867. This holiday began in 1845, and was originally celebrated on Queen Victoria’s natural birthday, May 24. This holiday holds historical significance to many as it signifies Canada’s ties to the British monarchy, and its colonial past. This holiday now reflects Canada’s evolution into its own country, while still honoring the legacy of Queen Victoria.
Victoria Day is a public holiday celebrated with parades, BBQ’s, fireworks, and many outdoor activities. As Canada transitions to the Summer season during this time, Victoria Day long weekend is a great way for families to embrace the warm weather and spend some time outdoors.
Is it a Statutory Holiday?
Victoria is a federal statutory holiday meaning that it is recognized as a holiday throughout the whole nation of Canada.
