Surrey School District’s Sullivan Heights Secondary Receives Inspirational School of 2024 Award from BC School Sports

Sullivan Heights Secondary was honoured as the Inspirational School of 2024 during the annual BC School Sports (BCSS) awards ceremony in Kelowna, BC.

The Inspirational School of 2024 celebrates schools that demonstrate dedication and commitment to a positive school culture, enhancing students’ lives through academic learning, and improving the student-athlete experience. This is the first time a Surrey district school has received this award in its 20-year history.

“This is one of the best honours we could have ever received,” said Sullivan Heights athletic director Gary Atwal. “We’re so proud to have won this because it recognizes years of hard work for some of the teachers that have been here.”

Previously known as the Most Outstanding School award, the criteria to win is as follows:

  • Administration has showcased support of athletics department
  • The school has created a culture that reflects BCSS values
  • Creative new ways to improve student-athlete experience

Sullivan Heights has made significant strides over the years in student athletics, currently supporting over 40 teams and involving more than 400 student athletes each year. However, the school staff’s approach goes beyond athletics, emphasizing the importance of applying the same effort and discipline in students’ academic pursuits. Atwal highlighted that this method helps students develop the confidence to succeed in all areas of life.

“They need to take responsibility of their own academic progress in order to make sure they’re in good standing for athletics,” he said. “There’s been a big shift in how students take pride in representing their school. They know they’re representing our school at all times and there’s a standard that goes with that.”
