Unveiling Olympic Village’s Newest Educational Hub– VSBs New School Development & Expansion of Henry Hudson Elementary School

As one of Canada’s most diverse public school networks, the Vancouver School District operates within a large, urban, and multicultural area. The Vancouver School District has an annual enrolment of 50,000 students from kindergarten through Grade 12 annually, and also offers educational opportunities to full-time adult education students. The Vancouver School Board (VSB) manages the Vancouver School District, and prioritizes delivering top-notch learning experiences to all students. With 46% of students speaking a second language at home, and 160 different languages being identified within the school, VSB celebrates their diverse district.

The VSB’s mission is to empower students to achieve their intellectual, artistic, physical, and social best in a dynamic environment that honors each individual’s value, to promote mutual respect, collaboration, and social responsibility.

Why is Expansion of the Vancouver School District Needed?

Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census reported that 70,570 children aged 0-14 years old resided in Vancouver, B.C. As this number continues to grow these children and their families have increasing difficulty finding schools to accommodate the growing population. The Vancouver School District currently has 29,593 elementary students, 21,379 secondary students, and 1,277 international students attending various schools throughout the district.

The VSB has 89 elementary schools (including 11 annexes), 18 secondary schools, 1 Vancouver Alternate Secondary School (VASS), 1 adult education school, and 1 distributed learning school (Vancouver Learning Network). The VSB is always looking to expand their number of schools and has recently received funding for a new development!

VSB Approved For New School Development

The Ministry of Education and Child Care announced on April 5, 2024, that $150 million will be allocated for a new school in Olympic Village and $15 million for the expansion of Henry Hudson Elementary.

This new four-story school will be located at Hinge Park, and will serve 630 students. It will also feature a neighbouring learning centre that will provide school-age children before and after school child care. The VSB is proud to share that this development will follow LEED gold standards, featuring a rooftop space that will act as a private area for students to access outdoor learning and an area to play. This creative method of construction will allow for vertical expansion rather than horizontal, ensuring that outdoor activities are prioritized, and that the neighbourhood can continue expanding.
