Experience the Canadian Education System in a Small Town– Studying at Kootenay Lake School District 8 (SD8)

Are you a highschool student who wants to experience the beauty and stillness of British Columbia without the traffic of a bustling metropolitan area like Vancouver?

Check out School District 8 (SD8), a rural school district offering a well-known international program, and an experience to last a lifetime. SD8 provides students with access to a small town paradise teeming with wildlife, and beautiful mountainous terrain to be explored. For specific information on the benefits of attending SD8 as an international student, check out our previous article below.

SD8 serves more than 15 different communities throughout the southeast Interior of British Columbia, Canada, and the Kootenays. SD8 also serves students across B.C. through their provincial online learning school, Elev8

We previously published an article and a video on the unexpected benefits of living in a small town such as Nelson, B.C., one of the towns encompassed in SD8, which can both be accessed below.

School District 8’s International Student Program

The Kootenay Lake School District’s international program is dedicated to giving foreign students the best personal service possible.

SD8 offers a unique International Program where they accept students from all around the world and immerse them in a world-class, rural educational experience. The small, quaintness of School District 8 offers many benefits to international students. Opportunities range from accelerated language acquisition and fluency, exceptional homestay families, and access to a tight-knit community of support.

In a small town setting, international students may have fewer opportunities to rely on their native language, encouraging them to practice and improve their proficiency in English spoken at school and in the community.

Living in a small town also provides a more intimate cultural experience, allowing international students to expose themselves to the local culture. They may have more opportunities to interact with locals and participate in community events, leading to a richer understanding of Canada’s customs, traditions, and way of life.

Small towns offer opportunities for unique experiences that may not be available in larger urban areas. SD8 offers outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, swimming, or camping. International students can broaden their horizons by participating in these activities and gain a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of Canada.
