How You Can Maximize Your Academic Experience with CityU’s International Student Services

What is Student Services?

CityU’s International Student Services is just that—a specialized centre within the university that caters specifically to the needs and challenges faced by international students, and offers ongoing support throughout their academic journey. The Services’ objective is to ensure the overall success and well-being of each student throughout their time at CityU, and to do so, they offer support, a variety of services and resources that are available for international students to use.

What kind of services are available?

While there are many types of services available to international students, the main segments include:

  • Transcripts, graduation, and commencement
  • Library and tutoring resources
  • Calendars and catalog
  • Career and work
  • Forms
  • Tuition, fees, payment options and scholarships
  • Studying as an international student
  • Financial tips
  • Resources and tips
  • Orientation information
  • Student advising
  • Writing Tutoring Centre

International Student Advising

CityU’s International Student Advising is a specialized area of International Student Services that focuses on addressing the needs and concerns of international students studying in Canada. Students can seek the help of an Advisor, who can guide and support them in navigating their academic journey. Advisors commonly help students with:

  • Course selection and academic prerequisites
  • Information about resources available
  • Understanding of institutional policies
  • Outlining overarching student expectations
  • Connecting with the broader CityU community and campuses

They can also help students with their transition to life in Canada. For example, students can receive support letters for Visa, Study Permit and/or Work Permit applications and extension, obtain information about health insurance coverage, request tutorial services, and more.

CityU’s Advisors are available to speak over the phone, through a virtual call, and in-person during International Student Services’ business hours.

Mental Health & Wellness

In university, students can often feel stressed or pressured due to the demanding academic environment, personal challenges, or the transition to a new and independent phase of life. Recognizing the importance of mental health and wellness, CityU’s support services can help students address these challenges.

  • CityU Empower Me Service — CityU’s partnership with Studentcare, a leading provider of student health plans in post-secondary institutions across Canada, offers Empower Me, a Student Assistance Program designed to support the mental health and well-being of CityU students. With 24/7/365 support services available, students can ring up Empower Me at any time of the day to receive assistance.
  • CityU Clinics — CityU’s clinics offer free counselling services to support students’ mental health journey. Virtual sessions are available at the Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria campuses, with Calgary also offering in-person visits. A similar service is expected to arrive at the Vancouver campus soon.
  • Here2Talk Here2Talk is a virtual mental health support service offered to students in post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, and it provides confidential, free and anonymous counselling and mental health support on a 24/7 basis. No appointments are needed; students can start receiving support once they call in or start a chat via the Here2Talk app or website.

See here for more information on how students can receive mental health support at CityU.

Writing Tutoring Centre

CityU’s Writing Tutoring Centre offers free support and assistance to students who are seeking help with their writing skills. Tutors, who are often peer students, can help struggling students with major assignments, essays, and preparation for midterm and final exams that are writing-heavy.

Here’s how it works:

  • Students are paired with tutors, who will provide one-on-one, individualized tutoring sessions to address specific concerns, answer questions, and guide students through their writing process.
  • Students are urged to seek assistance from tutors at all stages of their assignments. Tutors can support students at various stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to drafting, revising and editing. Tutors may also help students understand assignment prompts and develop effective thesis statements.
  • Students have the option to submit a finalized draft of their papers by a specified due date to receive feedback and advice on how they can improve their writing styles and mechanics.
  • Tutors will offer constructive feedback and explanations to help students enhance their writing skills.

Resources & Tips

International Student Services offers tips for students who are looking to save money, find a new bank, obtain permits, and get to know their campus, community and city. See here for a full list of resources that will help CityU students get started with their academic life in Canada.
