Victoria School District’s Victoria High Completes Major 4-Year Upgrades & Increases Their Student Capacity

Victoria High School has recently reopened after being seismically upgraded. As the oldest high school in Western Canada, created in 1914, Victoria High School began major renovations in August 2020. This project was intended to be completed by January 2024, but was delayed for various reasons. During these upgrades students were relocated to S.J. Willis to prevent construction disruptions, and to prioritize student safety.

As of early April 2024, four-years after construction began, students were able to return to this expanded and upgraded school. The historical exterior of the building was maintained throughout this renovation while the school upgraded its capacity to allow for 200 more students, without overcrowding issues. A two-storey addition was built at the east side of the school grounds to allow for this increase in student body to 1,000 students. Other than the capacity upgrade, this renovation included a new childcare learning centre, modernization of classrooms and learning facilities, and delicate preservation of notable interior/exterior elements.

Other significant upgrades that were part of this project were installation of an advanced fire-sprinkler system, brand new concrete stairwells, and enhancement to the mechanical systems.

The Government of B.C. supplied $77.1 million dollars for this project.
