Reading Break, A Time for Rest and Productivity for Students in Canada

Last Update: February 6, 2025

What is reading break?

Reading break, also known as reading week or midterm break, is a designated period during the academic year when students are given a temporary reprieve from classes. This break typically occurs in mid-February, aligning with Family Day in several Canadian provinces, though some institutions may schedule it in the fall term as well. The primary purpose of reading break is to provide students with time to catch up on coursework, prepare for upcoming exams, and recharge before the final stretch of the semester.

Although it’s called “reading break,” students tend to use this time for a variety of activities, from intensive study sessions to much-needed relaxation. Universities and colleges across Canada, including the University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia, observe reading break, although its length and timing may differ slightly among institutions.

How to utilize reading break effectively

While reading break is an excellent opportunity to take a step back from academic stress, it’s also a period for productivity. After all, balancing study with relaxation is key to making the most out of the break!

Catching up on schoolwork

As students, we’re all guilty of procrastinating on our studies, and one of the main reasons for reading break is to help students stay on top of their academic responsibilities. With midterms often around the corner, this break allows students to:

  • Review lecture notes and readings
  • Work on assignments and projects
  • Begin research for term papers
  • Clarify difficult concepts by revisiting past materials
  • Get ahead on upcoming coursework

To stay organized, students can create a study schedule, setting aside dedicated hours for coursework while allowing room for relaxation and other activities.

Group study and collaboration

For students who learn better through discussion and collaboration, forming or joining a study group can be beneficial. Reading break provides the perfect window to:

  • Revisit challenging topics with peers
  • Discuss different perspectives on assignments
  • Share study resources and techniques
  • Prepare for exams through mock quizzes and practice questions

Many universities keep their libraries open during reading break, making it easier for students to meet in a quiet environment conducive to studying.

Enjoying Canadian winter activities

Since reading break is held during the fall/winter season, students also have the opportunity to enjoy classic Canadian winter activities. Whether staying near campus or traveling, there are plenty of options to make the most of the season:

Skiing and snowboarding

Canada is home to some of the best ski resorts, including Whistler Blackcomb (British Columbia), Banff and Lake Louise (Alberta), and Mont Tremblant (Quebec). Many students take this opportunity to hit the slopes with friends.

Ice skating

Many cities, including Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal, have public skating rinks. The Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa is particularly popular during this time, and in Vancouver, the Robson Square Ice Rink is almost always busy during the holiday season.

Winter hiking and snowshoeing

National and provincial parks offer beautiful winter trails for those who prefer a quieter, more scenic retreat.

Visiting hot springs

For a relaxing winter experience, places like Harrison Hot Springs in British Columbia and the Banff Upper Hot Springs in Alberta provide a warm escape from the cold.
