📝 How Students Apply for a Co-op or Internship
The application process is designed to ensure that work placements are academically relevant and compliant with study permit regulations. Typically, students will complete the following steps:
- Confirm Eligibility
Students should first verify whether their program includes a mandatory work placement. This information is usually outlined by the institution or available through the Career Centre.
- Obtain the Required School Letter
Schools issue an official letter confirming that the program requires a work placement for graduation. This document is essential when applying for a co-op work permit.
- Apply for a Co-op/Intern Work Permit
Students must submit their application while holding a valid study permit. The work placement must account for 50% or less of the total academic program.
- Search and Apply for Positions
With guidance from the Career Centre, students can explore suitable opportunities, refine their applications, and connect with employers. Many institutions review and approve placements to ensure they meet educational standards.
✅ Who Can Apply for a Co-op Work Permit
International students may be eligible if all of the following conditions are met:
- Hold a valid Canadian study permit
- Enrolled in a program that requires work experience to graduate
- Possess an official letter confirming the mandatory placement
- The co-op or internship represents 50% or less of the total study program
This permit is separate from standard on-campus or off-campus work authorization and is strictly tied to the academic program.
❌ Who Is Not Eligible
Students are generally not eligible for a co-op work permit if their studies focus solely on:
- English or French as a Second Language (ESL/FSL)
- General interest courses
- Programs intended only as preparation for another study program
Students who wish to work in Canada but do not qualify for a co-op permit must explore other work permit options, if eligible.
🕒 Working While Waiting for Your Co-op Permit
Students already in Canada who have submitted their co-op work permit application may be permitted to begin working under existing authorization:
- Unlimited hours on campus
- Up to 24 hours per week off campus (including co-op hours and other paid work)
- Unlimited hours during scheduled academic breaks
