UWinnipeg Undergraduate Publishes Quantum Research: Explore the University’s Physics Program

Last Update: July 17, 2026

📌UWinnipeg Undergraduate Turns Curiosity into Published Research

University of Winnipeg undergraduate physics student Alex Martin worked with Professor Dr. Jeff Martin to co-publish a paper explaining the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), a quantum-computing algorithm that can help estimate the energy levels of small systems such as molecules. Published in the European Journal of Physics, the paper uses a clear mathematical example to make this complex concept more accessible while highlighting the valuable research opportunities available to undergraduate students at UWinnipeg.

🔭Explore the Physics Program at UWinnipeg

The University of Winnipeg’s Physics program explores how the universe works—from galaxies and black holes to atoms and subatomic particles. Through small classes, hands-on laboratory instruction and opportunities to participate in undergraduate research, students build a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied physics. The university offers three- and four-year Bachelor of Science degrees, with specialized streams including Applied Physics, Computational Physics, Medical Physics, Mathematical Physics, Chemical Physics, Pre-Engineering and Honours Physics.

What Can Students Expect to Learn?

Depending on their chosen stream and courses, students may study:

  • Foundations of physics
  • Calculus and linear algebra
  • Astronomy and cosmology
  • Quantum mechanics and quantum computing
  • Electrodynamics
  • Optics, waves and light
  • General relativity
  • Physical and scientific computing
  • Computational modelling
  • Subatomic and particle physics
  • Medical imaging and MRI technology
  • Robotics and digital agriculture
  • Materials science
  • Black holes, superstrings and quantum gravity
  • Experimental methods and laboratory techniques

Students may also have opportunities to work alongside professors on research projects and obtain paid positions with university research groups.

🚀 Future Career Pathways

Physics graduates develop strong analytical, mathematical, technical and problem-solving skills that can support careers in:

  • Physics research
  • Engineering and technical consulting
  • Aerospace and space technology
  • Data science and data analysis
  • Software and application development
  • Medical physics and medical imaging
  • Robotics and emerging technologies
  • Sustainable energy and materials science
  • Industrial or government laboratories
  • Computational modelling
  • Science education and teaching
  • Scientific communication and media
  • Financial and quantitative analysis
  • Graduate studies in physics, engineering or related sciences

Some specialized careers, such as medical physics, research and engineering, may require additional graduate education, professional training or certification. UWinnipeg physics graduates have worked with organizations in technology, aerospace, engineering and applied research, while many others have continued their studies at leading graduate schools across North America.
