Applications are open for the Master of Design (MDes) at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBC Okanagan) for the May 2027 intake.
Designed for students interested in connecting creativity with real-world problem-solving, the MDes brings together design, innovation, technical knowledge and entrepreneurship. It also welcomes applicants from a range of academic backgrounds.
🎨 What Is the UBC Okanagan Master of Design?
The MDes is a 12-month, full-time, in-person professional master’s program jointly offered by UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering and Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.
Students explore critical design thinking and creative practice while working on real-world challenges with industry, community and public-sector partners. The program is built around four areas: design, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.
It is a 30-credit program, combining core courses, an elective, studio and makerspace experience, and a final showcase. Rather than focusing only on traditional design practice, the program brings technical and creative perspectives together.
🌎 Do You Need a Design Background?
No specific design degree is required.
UBCO describes the program as suitable for graduates from engineering, technical, business, arts and creative backgrounds. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and meet UBC’s minimum academic requirements, which vary depending on where the undergraduate degree was completed.
The graduate program update provided by UBCO also highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the MDes, noting that students may come from engineering, business and creative disciplines.
📝 What Should International Students Prepare?
International students should prepare the following basic application materials:
- CV or resume
- Post-secondary transcripts
- Statement of Interest
- Portfolio or project experience
- Names of two referees
- Proof of English language proficiency, if required
