AP Capstone Diploma Program
Those who are taking AP courses have the option of completing the AP Capstone Diploma Program during their last two years of high school. So, this innovative program was made through feedback from college admissions officers and postsecondary recruitment advisors. All in all, it helps fill the gaps in the skills of some students entering postsecondary, including inquiry, research, collaboration, and writing.
This Capstone program is made up of two different sequences, one portion is for the seminar and the other is for research. To begin, in the seminar, students will be challenged to explore complex questions, understand and evaluate opposing viewpoints, interpret and synthesize information, and develop, communicate, and defend their own points of view. So, this will be done using interdisciplinary materials, covering multiple subject areas. Additionally, the research portion, students will conduct their own research throughout the year on a topic of their choice, with the help of mentors to guide them.
Also, students who earn scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research exams and scores of 3 or higher on four AP exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma™. The Burnaby school district is the only BC district to offer such a unique course, all year-round. So, the course is a small personal course for European international students looking to maintain their Latin and Greek languages for their classical studies requirements.
The course is offered outside school hours in the evening once a week, bringing their outlines of the language course from their home country so the teacher can tailor the program for them. Plus, these students through the program often go on to perform well on the Canadian National Latin Exams, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.
The Burnaby School District offers 4 different sports academies to its students, including ice hockey, field lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball. Firstly, in hockey, students learn many skills and don’t participate in competitive games.
Meanwhile, in field lacrosse, the program is good for non-beginners and includes intra-squad scrimmages to gain a better understanding of different systems of play. It is available for boys grades 8-12.
Also, in soccer, students that already play soccer improve their skills, no competitive games take place.
Finally, the volleyball program there is two streams available; these are the elite and the academy streams. The elite stream is for students who have a desire to pursue volleyball later in life. The coach to athlete ratio is much lower here. But, the academy stream is better for beginners with a desire to incorporate volleyball into their academics.
This not all there is available. Also, the Burnaby School District offers programs in French Immersion, English Language Learning, Honours, and Sports Clubs. Burnaby’s district is keen on offering students courses in whatever they need or wish to take, hence the amazing variety of courses available.
